The FTSE Actuaries
industry sector and sub-sector for each company which appears within Company REFS is found under the heading ‘SECTOR’. The classification system is
operated by FTSE International - owned jointly by the London Stock Exchange
and the Financial Times - in conjunction with the Institute and Faculty
of Actuaries.
The FTSE Actuaries'
industry classification system
Each company is classified according to the industry sub-sector which
most closely fits the business area from which the majority of its profits
is earned. There are around 75 sub-sectors, which are grouped into 37
sectors belonging to the following six ‘economic groups’: 1.Mineral Extraction
2.General Manufacturers 3.Consumer Goods 4.Services 5.Utilities 6.Financials
For example, in the Mineral Extraction economic group there are three
sectors and six sub-sectors, as follows:
Sectors:
Sub-sectors: Extractive Industries Gold Mining Other Mineral Extractors
& Mines Mining Finance Oil, Integrated Oil, Integrated Oil Exploration
and Production Oil Exploration & Production Oil Services
Each sub-sector has
a strict definition; Gold Mining, for example, is defined as ‘Prospectors
for, extractors and refiners of gold-bearing ores’.
The industry sub-sectors are defined to meet the requirements of the current
FTSE Actuaries industry classification system. This is used to allocate
the constituent companies by size within the following share indices:
FTSE 100
FTSE Mid 250
FTSE Actuaries 350
FTSE SmallCap
FTSE Actuaries All-Share

together with telephone, telex and fax numbers where applicable, is provided
in each entry.

Results announced
If interim
or preliminary results have been announced since the last annual report
was published, a synopsis shows the reporting period, turnover (T/O),
pre tax profit, earnings per share (EPS) and dividend. Comparative figures
for the previous period are given in parentheses.
Pre tax profit and EPS are shown on an FRS3 basis, as
reported by the company, and may therefore include exceptional and non-recurring
items. EPS figures are shown as published on the date indicated, and are
not recalculated to reflect share capital changes which may occur after
that date.
Outlook
The text of
any statement (e.g. the Chairman’s review) provided by the company within
the last annual report, and within any subsequent statements (e.g. trading
statement, or interim or preliminary announcement), is scanned to abstract
any remarks which allude to the company’s trading prospects.
Each outlook statement is preceded by the date and source. ‘(4-Jun-96)
Prelim: ch’, for example, indicates remarks by the chairman (ch) from
the preliminary results announcement (Prelim) dated 4th June 1996. In
the absence of any such remarks, the words ‘no outlook statement’ appear
instead.
Outlook statements are shown in chronological order, and are retained
until superseded by the latest annual report. Space constraints dictate
that outlook statements are sometimes abbreviated, and may consist of
two or more elements separated by ‘...’ where appropriate.
Newsflow
A synopsis is
given of each significant news announcement made by the company during
the past 12 months, and of any major share capital change. This is preceded
in each case by the effective date, the category of event (e.g. Ann =
news announcement) and the originator of any statement shown within quotation
marks (e.g. ce = chief executive).
